Vaginal Itching – Finding the Culprits
Vaginal itching is more a symptom of certain underlying condition than a condition alone. The underlying condition may be severe at times. Thus, it is imperative to find out the causes of vaginal itching and treat the problem as soon as possible to avoid further health complications.

In case the occurrence of vaginal itching kick starts after using some new product that comes in contact with the most sensitive area. Here, you must note that you are using some product, which is irritating to your skin. So if you are using some new soap, fabric softener, detergent, lubricant, spermicidal etc, then check with the same, as these might be the cause of vaginal itching. Avoid using the products for a few weeks and check if your vaginal itching suppresses or not. Further, if you are wearing underwear or panty made from synthetic fiber, then replace the same with cotton ones especially if you are indulging in any physical activity. Further, the pH of vagina may become a hassle to maintain and thus, mild, natural, and unscented fibers are good for your sensitive area.
- Yeast Infection
Itching and burning sensations are two primary symptoms of yeast infection. You might also experience smelly discharge alike curdled milk. In fact, women often have been seen treating yeast infection when there is no infection at all and this does not solve their issue but only making the infection more resistant to all the over-the-counter meds. If you believe that you are having yeast infection, then you must discuss the same with your doctor at the very earliest.
- Sexually Transmitted Diseases or STDs
Most of the STDs trigger vaginal itching including HPV, genital herpes, gonorrhea and Chlamydia. Thus, getting yourself tested for any STDs will help to avert or discard the problems right in the initial stages itself that can further cause vaginal itching.
- Bacterial Vaginosis
This condition occurs when natural bacteria present in vagina of a woman undergoes excessive production causing vaginal itching with smelly discharge. Whilst the name is somewhat frightening, you need to know that bacterial vaginosis is a common condition and fades away without the need of any treatment. At times, it might turn aggressive requiring antibiotic treatment to deal with the abnormal bacterial levels.
- Hormonal Imbalance
Hormonal imbalance especially during menopause and pregnancy may trigger vaginal itching. This is because excess production of vaginal mucous during pregnancy causes vaginal itching. Menopause on the other hand makes the vagina to stop the production of the vaginal mucous that will further cause itching and dryness in vagina.
